Stress Conditions of Four Types of Dished Heads

26 Nov 2024

Hemispherical head: It has good stress-bearing condition and is often used in high-pressure vessels. However, due to its large depth, it is difficult to process and manufacture.

Torispherical head: The bending stress is large and it is suitable for pressure vessels such as storage tanks, heat exchangers, towers, reactors, boilers, etc. However, its bending stress may lead to large discontinuous stress on the boundary of the transition zone.

Elliptical head: It has good comprehensive performance and is widely used in medium and low pressure vessels, such as boilers and LNG storage tanks. Its depth is between the hemispherical and dished heads, and its stress condition is also between the two.

Cone head: The mechanical properties are poor, and the connection with the cylinder or pipe may produce large discontinuous stress due to sudden shape changes.

In summary, the hemispherical head has the best stress performance, the elliptical head has a medium stress performance, and the torispherical head and cone head have relatively poor stress conditions.
